Durga Puja & Navratri 2024

As the white strand of the ethereal Kaash Phool (kans grass) sways against brilliant blue skies and cotton candy clouds, it brings with it a feeling that is best described by us Bongs as "pujo pujo gondho"!

It is that time of the year again when we prepare to welcome Maa Durga - the bestower of power & strength, to our doorsteps as she embarks on her annual sojourn to our lands.

Let the festivities begin!

Our Celebration

A colourful journey through an eclectic array of rich cultural traditions

Uber Verdant is only but a microcosm of the city of Bengaluru, a city that prides itself on being a melting pot of different cultures. And hence our celebration of the annual homecoming of Shakti - the divine feminine, is a potpourri of the various rituals and traditions followed across the length and breadth of our vast country.

Golu

Golu is the festive display of dolls and figurines observed in the South of India during the autumn festive season, particularly around Navratri.  Also called Bommai Golu in Tamil and Gombe Habba or Bommala Koluvu in Kannada, these displays are typically thematic, narrating a legend from a Hindu text to court life, weddings, everyday scenes and miniature kitchen utensils.

It is akin to invoking the celestial beings into our homes to celebrate and re-emphasize that good ultimately wins over evil. Therefore, Golu celebrates the victory of good over evil, symbolizing the efforts of Mahadevi and celestial beings to vanquish Mahishasura!

Garba

Garba is a form of dance that originated in the state of Gujarat, but its popularity has now spread far and wide across various parts of India, and among Hindu communities worldwide.

The word Garba originates from the Sanskrit word Garbha, meaning womb. The dancers dance in concentric circles with an image of Ambe Maa being placed in the middle. The rings of dancers revolve around the image of the female divinity, as time in Hinduism is cyclical - from birth to life to death to rebirth. The dance thus symbolizes that God, represented here in feminine form, is the only constant in a constantly changing universe.
